Tools For Life: Dominion Opportunity
by Blaine Cochran

At this time in history I believe we (as Christians) have an unprecedented opportunity to influence the culture for Christ, but I don't believe the church is ready for a large scale awakening or revival. Why? Because, only 4% of born again believers have a Biblical world and life view and we are losing 50-70% of our children to secular humanism-man centered reasoningWhat would the church do with a bunch of new Christians? Why should God move in the lives of unbelievers when 96% of Christians don't know how God's word speaks wisdom for every area of life?

We are in desperate need for reformation in the church, but looking at Biblical history and the ministry strategies of most churches I have no reason to believe that God will revive the church as a whole. However, I do believe God is raising up a generation of young men that will start their own churches and train others to do God's work in the culture.

Our culture is in drastic need of spiritual leadership and it is the churches job to provide those leaders-to equip the saints! There are many elected officials that call themselves Christians, but where are the politicians of principle that truly have a Biblical Worldview? Where are the Christian writers and movie makers that are creating thought provoking content. God's Word/truth has become irrelevant to society and Christian leaders are to blame.

We are surrounded by men, women and institutions in our culture that exalt themselves against God and anyone speaking His Truth. Contemporary educators tell us there is no such thing as absolute Truth, the Bible has no place in the public arena, and religion and science do not mix.

HELPING FAMILIES CHANGE AMERICA

The fact is, God clearly speaks about Christians redeeming culture. In the Old testament His people used a physical sword to take the land but we use a spiritual sword to advance the Kingdom!

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God..."   2 Corinthians 10:3-5

In light of our culture and the state of the Church, I believe the spiritual welfare and education of our families is the preeminent issue for us as families! The challenge before us is to connect what we say we believe to how we live our lives. I mean having a Biblical understanding of our roles as family members, students, workers, athletes, citizens, etc. so that we will be ready to give an answer for the hope we have. This takes God's wisdom and a tremendous effort to accomplish and will not happen by just going through the motions of family living and church attendance!

Looking at the ministry of Christ and the book of Acts I see three elements necessary to a sustained Christian walk. When I say sustained I mean a faith that has endured the tests and crises of life. Men and women that have walked with God from College into their 40's and 50's attest to these three.

  1. Convictions – They were taught a Biblical Worldview that was sufficient for the questions and crisis of the next 20 years, particularly the challenge of modern consciousness with its implicit secularization and pluralization.
  2. Character – They met a mentor/teacher who incarnated the worldview they were coming to consciously identify as their own, and in and through that relationship they saw it was possible to reside within that worldview themselves.
  3. Community – They made choices over the years to live out their worldview in the company of mutually committed believers who continued to sharpen and support those ideas that have been coherent across their life time. These are taken from the book The Fabric of Faithfulness.

There is so much to say about the three - How we take them and make them more a part of our lives. I have been wrestling with some questions that I ask you to now ponder. I suggest you put these questions and the three in your Bible, on your desk, on your fridge-wherever you will see them on a regular basis. If you don't these questions will get squeezed out by all the urgencies of everyday living.

  1. How do we translate what we believe about the world into how we daily live in the world?
  2. How do we give our sons and daughters a vision for the transcendent in a world that denies truth and meaning?

These questions relate deeply to our personal philosophy and purpose for education. If the spiritual welfare of our children is our biggest concern then we as families must realize that our educational philosophies and choices are the greatest influence on our children's spiritual lives. Education and The Three is where the church is failing as evidenced in the stats mentioned earlier and numerous others. The Bottom line - each families education philosophy is directly related to their children's spiritual health.
