Man, by his
Fall, having made himself incapable of
life by that covenant [of obedience to
the Law], the Lord was pleased to make
a second, commonly called the covenant
of grace: wherein he freely offereth
unto sinners life and salvation by Jesus
Christ, requiring of them faith in him,
that they may be saved, and promising to
give unto all those that are ordained
unto life, his Holy Spirit, to make them
willing and able to believe.
Westminster Confession of Faith (1647).

Monergism:
The view that the Holy Spirit is the only agent who
effects regeneration of Christians. It is in
contrast with synergism, the view that there is a
cooperation between the divine and the human in the
regeneration process. Monergism is a redemptive
blessing purchased by Christ for those the Father
has given Him (1 Pet 1:3, John 3:5,6, 6:37, 39).
This grace works independently of any human
cooperation and conveys that power into the fallen
soul whereby the person who is to be saved is
effectually enabled to respond to the gospel call
(John 1:13; Acts 2:39, 13:48; Rom 9:16). It is that
supernatural power of God alone whereby we are
granted the spiritual ability to comply with the
conditions of the covenant of grace; that is, to
apprehend the Redeemer by a living faith, to come up
to the terms of salvation, to repent of idols and to
love God and the Mediator supremely.
