He discusses Calvin's thoughts on predestination, election, reprobation;
their relation to the Fall, and of course that infamous charge that to

In this pioneering study Paul Helm shows that the substantial claims

Calvin, about the relation between the death and intercession of Christ
and the character of saving faith and conversion, cannot be supported
from Calvin, but rest on distortions and misunderstandings.

Calvin on the Necessity of Prayer
"...We clearly see how destitute and
devoid of all good things man is, and how he lacks all aids to
salvation. Therefore, if he seeks resources to succor him in his need,
he must go outside himself and get them elsewhere....But after we have
been instructed by faith to recognize that whatever we need and whatever
we lack is in God, and in our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom the Father
willed all the fullness of his bounty to abide [cf. Col. 1:19; John
1:16] so that we may all draw from it as from an overflowing spring, it
remains for us to seek in him, and in prayers to ask of him, what we
have learned to be in him."
Calvin, 'Institutes of the Christian Religion', III.xx.1
A
Simple Explanation of Monergism
by John Hendryx
Monergism simply means that it is God who gives ears to hear and eyes to
see. It is God alone who gives illumination and understanding of His
word that we might believe; It is God who raises us from the dead, who
circumcises the heart; unplugs our ears; It is God alone who can give us
a new sense that we may, at last, have the moral capacity to behold His
beauty and unsurpassed excellency. "In theology, [monergism is] the
doctrine that the Holy Spirit is the only efficient agent in
regeneration [the new birth] - that the human will possesses no
inclination to holiness until regenerated [born again], and therefore
cannot cooperate in regeneration."
